212° Academy welcomes first students

A new initiative in gifted education for Warren County Public Schools (WCPS), 212° Academy, welcomed its first students August 26. The academy takes its name from the temperature at which water boils--212° Fahrenheit. Just as matter changes form when water becomes steam, 212° Academy is a place for high-ability 5th and 6th grade students to be transformed as they immerse themselves into an integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) curriculum.

To help establish this new pull-out program for gifted students, WCPS has received a grant from the American Honda Foundation.

Lorie Richey, who oversees gifted education for WCPS, says the new program will serve qualifying students from all 14 of the district's elementary schools. The students will be brought to the Warren County Academic/Aquatics Center next to the WCPS Central Office on Lovers Lane. That building's two classrooms have been used for the GEMS (Gifted Education in Math and Science) Academy program for the past five years, but grant funding for that program expired. Former GEMS Academy teachers David Baxter and Jennifer Smith Sheffield will be the 212° Academy teachers.

The American Honda Foundation (AHF), established by American Honda Motor Co., has awarded more than $27 million to organizations serving approximately 115 million people in virtually every state in the U.S. AHF engages in grant making that reflects the basic tenets, beliefs and philosophies of Honda companies, which are characterized by the following qualities: imaginative, creative, youthful, forward-thinking, scientific, humanistic and innovative. The foundation supports youth education with a specific focus on the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects in addition to the environment.
